Hello, so within the past few days I have been cooking up a few ideas for two different formicariums I would like to make. One will have the Light up ant tunnels I want to make, and the other is going to be a normal formicarium but I was curious about one thing? Here is what is on my mind!

I would like to make it so it kind of looks like this...

However, I would like to make it so that the tunnels are not connected. Like I would have to pull something out to give the ants access to the other side of the nest. If they have all that room they will use it for storing garbage and food which will result in mold. And... why not build it smaller? I don't want to build a formicarium when they get bigger because i am lazy like that. Any ideas would be appreciated.

If you were really lazy (like me), what you could do is build that nest even though its a little too big for your colony (i think that's what you said), and then just keep your ants in something else until its big enough to place in that nest. That way you get a nice new nest and you don't have to mess around with a bunch of unnecessary mods.

But if youre really set on modding it you could drill a small hole in the plastic right into a thin tunnel, leaving as much space between that point and the entrance as youd like, and then stuff cotton into the tunnel or some other barrier to stop the ants from accessing the rest of the tunnels until youd like them too. However, doing this might be difficult if the tunnels branch off a lot. Youd have to drill more holes is all.

Hope this helps!
