Hello, the test tubes I want to buy are made from polystyrene. Is it harmful to ants at all. I normally would have just bought them and tried them, however I have had a lot of ants die for reasons that I would have never thought of. So i figured I better just ask to see if you guys now?

Thanks,

    T.C.

I've never seen a polystyrene test tube before. Wouldn't the ants be able to chew through it?

ah never mind, I was thinking styrofoam.

Styrofoam is polystyrene as well, but at a much lower density.

Styrene is very susceptible to chemical degradation with strong acids.  I can't tell you the resulting compounds or whether they will be harmful, but you should expect these to be single use tubes, as the chemicals introduced into the tube will etch and discolor the plastic over time.
