Hi!

A few days ago, I was able to get my hands on a packet of Triops eggs (Which I prefer calling "Vernal Pool Mixtures", because I always prefer seeing the clam shrimps and fairy shrimps in the tank over the violent and cannibalistic Triops species). 2 Ostracods (seed shrimp), a few flea shrimp, one clam shrimp, 3 fairy shrimp and one tadpole shrimp (Triops) have hatched so far. I will post some pictures soon! I hope the Triops doesn't eat the other shrimp. :P

Also, there was a small dead ant worker in the packet. RIP... I hope it wasn't my dream species...

Awesome!!! I remember growing triops when I was a kid, but don't remember companies selling "variety packs"... can you send me the name of the brand or website you got them from, I would love to check this out :) . Have you ever been able to get them to breed? I own a 10 gallon freshwater fish tank and may somehow integrate them into it once I set it up.

I will check the brand name, because I left the box somewhere and I can't find it. I got it at the Waikiki Aquarium.

The funny thing is that 50% of the time most of the eggs aren't Triops! They just scoop detritus off a vernal pool and that detritus has many species in it. Most brands have those detritus packs, so try to get an egg bag that looks like it is filled with mulch.

My Flea Shrimp reproduced! It's only the 8th day! They've got to be the most easy pet to take care of. Also, Triops are predatory (They will cannibalize), so it is recommended to keep them separate from other troops and vernal pool organisms, thus making breeding super difficult. :P.

Fairy Shrimps are probably the most easy and colorful vernal pool pet to keep (other than Flea Shrimp). They are pretty small and slow-moving, though, so they might get eaten or get sucked into a filter. Branchinecta Gigas is big enough to not get attacked or sucked into a filter, but they are very hard to keep. Keeping them may be pretty cool, though!

Triops may eat other small, weak, fish, so caution must be exercised with them! :P

Flea Shrimp and Ostracods are far too small for an aquarium (in the filter they will go). In a nice, cool water container with some Fairy Shrimp and Clam shrimp they will thrive. Oxygenation is necessary, though.

Clam Shrimp are like Flea Shrimp, but huge. They can grow to the size of a fairy shrimp or triops. They seem to be easy to care for (mine are gobbling up algae wafer pieces), but they may be hard to breed.

I hope this helps! :)

Spirulina powder is a good food to feed them. The algae will bloom quickly with indirect sunlight and I'm sure they'll eat it.

My Triops is huge now! Almost an inch! Also, he ate all the fairy shrimp and clam shrimp. I can see one flea shrimp and a couple of ostracods hiding in the detritus.

Is there only one triop left? If you have more I can give you tips on breeding.

Only one triops hatched. I've bred triops before though. Also, I have a bunch of eggs left, which is good because I can raise more fairy shrimp.

I used to have those a lot as a kid. Always ended up with one giant Triop that ate all the rest. lol
