Some ants are at the end of the outworld port which is not being used so it's plugged with cotton what does that mean? Does it mean anything?

There was more in there before about 7 or 6 of them and they were actually in the port this time they weren't because I disturbed the nest

so I'm guessing behind the cotton is nothing? if so the ants are checking it out since they can feel the air moving through it. or the are planning an escape.

If there is nothing behind it, they can sense the airflow and are most likely guarding it. Camponotus are especially sensitive to airflow changes, and it appears you may have Camponotus but the picture isn't quite clear enough to be sure.
