Location - New Zealand north island under a pot
When found - I believe it was last year in September
Length - hard to measure but I'd say 6-7 millimetres
Anything else - this species had their nuptial flight about 1 to 2 weeks ago I brood boosted her when I caught her

Looks like Technomyrmex jocosus. Caught 3 of these myself last week :).

 

I'm so wrong.

The pictures are blurry, but it looks more along the lines of Paratrechina longicornis to me.


If you've enjoyed using my expertise and identifications, please do not create undue ecological risk by releasing your ants. The environment which we keep our pet insects is alien and oftentimes unsanitary, so ensure that wild populations stay safe by giving your ants the best care you can manage for the rest of their lives, as we must do with any other pet.

 

Exotic ants are for those who think that vibrant diversity is something you need to pay money to see. It is illegal to transport live ants across state lines.

No, I think that these ants have a larger head and thorax. Paratrechina have skinny bodies.

what???? You can get one from Antkit for a few bucks. I got mine on eBay for 30. I think that it's Technomyrmex, it has the color, flight time, and body shape as them.

Oh yea I forgot about antkit but is that macro lens good? I've already placed a order for a nest 2 days ago I was gonna wait and see if it's good. Also thanks everyone for identifying it.

Seeing them again, the antennae aren't quite long enough for Paratrechina. That would most likely leave Nylanderia (or the possibility of Prolasius advenus, but the antennal scapes on your ants look too long.).

I definitely was wrong about these being Technomyrmex, their queens are much more worker-like in appearance:

I agree that they're probably Nylanderia.

Oh there are thanks for that. The sites information that I was looking at must of been wrong.

 

If you are using Antmaps' diversity view to see all the species in New Zealand, keep in mind that they only report what we believe to be native species. The species range map, for a given ant, will show the reported native AND nonnative range.

Oh, but It looks like New Zealand does have native Nylanderia.
