After yesterday arvos storm rolled through Brissy and surrounds, I decided to go for a wander this morning to see if I could find a queen or 2. I was walking past the water treatment plant in an industrial zone when I saw a winged ant in among a bunch of other ants I have commonly seen. My first thought was to scoop her up, then I had second thoughts when I saw a bunch of smaller winged ants. Hooray! A nuptial flight in progress

I have 2 of these queens in captivity. If any expert knows what species this is, it would be awesome to know.

I'm a reckoning I'm going for another wander this arvo. Should be able to catch a queen or two after seeing this. I'll also gather a few workers and take some shots under a microscope so they might be identified.

Nah. I didn't scoop one up. The 2 I have are from a couple of weeks ago.

Hi Liam

Do you live in Brisbane? I've collected a total of 8 queens in 14 days so less than 1 queen per day. I've had days when I find 2 queens and others when I find none. 6 of the queens I have found have been on the foot path of the same road in East Ipswich, but I'm sure there are other ant gold mines elsewhere in Brissy. Just a matter of finding them.
