If you've enjoyed using my expertise and identifications, please do not create undue ecological risk by releasing your ants. The environment which we keep our pet insects is alien and oftentimes unsanitary, so ensure that wild populations stay safe by giving your ants the best care you can manage for the rest of their lives, as we must do with any other pet.

Exotic ants are for those who think that vibrant diversity is something you need to pay money to see. It is illegal to transport live ants across state lines.

Pennsylvanicus are black. The one in the picture here is mainly black, with some brownish, and a tiny dark reddish dot on its back.

Camponotus nerarcticus and C. caryae are also possibilities. That would be some subtle coloration for C. subbarbatus, although I wouldn't discount them yet.

I agree with Camponotus subbarbatus. I've seen so many different shades of color in this species. What he has might just be a very dark color variation.

I accidentally froze all my ants

Yeah. I have a very yellow queen with very yellow workers, a normal queen with normal workers and a dark queen like this one with dark workers. The dark queen has barely any yellow stripes, the light queen has two tiny bands of black with some light red on the thorax, with a dark red head. It's the same with the workers.
