Are winged queens found in colonies ever fertile?

I went out and dug up a colony and found 3 winged ants, but no queen. It was painful and hard to concentrate. Plus it was getting dark so I rushed. Are these winged queens in colonies ever fertile? Or only virgins stay at the nest?

 

They are imported red fire ants BTW.

These queens are 99% chance infertile

so it is nearly pointless to hold on to them?

their is about a 99.9% chance they are infertile, if not even less.
