These Ants are the same ones I got in a big pile floating  in a flood. The whole pile must of been two seperate colonies, because the in the outworld their was a war and now about half of the ants are dead. However in the actual nest part all the ants are getting along and appear to be from the same colony! The nest was a quick throw together and it's very economy, :D  However I have made similar ones to this and they always work. Their is a slot with a cotton ball in it with super tiny wholes in the plastic that surround it. Some of the ants have actually got in their, but it is no big deal, They're is a yellow piece of tape on each of the containers because that is where I add the water to the cotton. :o

Maybe but it's small and a heat lamp would cover the whole nest!

The colonies of some Myrmica species, especially in M. rubra are known to fracture easily, aka split up. Especially during the winter and fall. Colonies have been documented to merge together during the spring.
