Over two years ago, I worked on something kind of like this, but quickly realized that the market would not support what I had in mind.

Great Concept Terry. It's a shame there isn't more demand for this kind of thing. I think the product appeal of things like this would help draw in new hobbyists.

Perhaps something in between this and the products currently available may work?

B.

Actually an ardiuno that controls the climate isn't a bad idea, I might do that myself.

Hit "Like This" if it helped.

The true cost of such a product isn't really in R&D. The problem is that no one is willing to pay so much for an integrated system to justify the time and effort in developing and making them available.

Even labs and museum opt for simple and cost-effective setups (read: plaster nests) as opposed to high tech stuff. As for consumers, most beginners wouldn't splash so much to start with and experienced keepers would often prefer their own setups.

Anyway, in terms of climate control, the Germans have a lot of options available already.

I've been messing around with a Rasberry pi to run two usb heaters and two temperature probes.  Could prolly reuse the 2nd probe and heating pad to measure and adjust humidity. This is all linked to mah network so i can view in real time on my phone or home PC.

How are you guys thinking of automating humidity?  When I was raising some tropical plants, I used to use an ultrasonic mister (cheap and easy.)  Had the mister and a water resistant fan that would kick on and blow the mist thru ducting in and dial it in with a couple % of what I wanted using my home auto system.  However not too practical for formicarium :(

I was creating some formicarium designs in 3D to print out, and was looking to leave some space for the DHT22 temp/humidity sensors, but relative to the size of the formicarium I was designing, they seemed so huge.

EDIT:  Also check out the NodeMCU and other ESP8266 based boards. DIrt cheap compared to the Pis, but have built in Wifi and easy to program (can even use the Arduino IDE.)  I've been tinkering with those lately.

Didn't even think about using a Raspi for this. Currently turned mine into an emulation station with any and every videogame .... I would totally get a smaller version to run all of that in real time though. Think you all are onto something here.....

That is completely the wrong form factor for what you want. You need something like a SHT25.

He was complaining about size of the other units (which might be breakout boards/unnecessary plastic covers)...the usual solution to size is surface mount components. Even so it is trivial to solder up some leads to the pads of the sensor for I2C communication.
