Hello,

I'm James and I was looking for someone near me that will sell me a queen?  I live in Queens right outside New York City.

I have been reading these forums for a while and I think I have enough information to get started. Of course I will still need a ton of help.

Either way like to connect with a local ant keeper and hopefully learn about the different ants we have here.

Thank you

Welcome James. I'm in the same boat as you. I'm going through GAN for my first colony. There seem to be a farmer from Lafayette, NJ. The process takes a little while. Good luck!

Welcome, okeedoke22. I'm new also; just registered today.

I got my queen from the GAN project. I went to the farmer in Lafayette, NJ. John is a very nice guy and I'm sure would be happy to help you. In addition, you seem to be closer to Lafayette than I am. Drove over 2 hours one way! I live in south/central Jersey.

Hey okee, welcome. I would have helped you as I have several colonies that I don't need, but, nys law stinks because it is overly broad regarding transportation and sale of "pests", and state dept of agriculture forgets to reply to emails for clarification.

Haha! They probably have you under surveillance, just waiting for you to screw up so a SWAT team can swoop in and protect some endangered moth from certain doom.

I think they are too busy going after ExxonMobil for global warming, and I hear Santa Claus is lined up next because of his anti competitive behavior and flying without a license.

Hi James and welcome to the august circle of ant keepers.

There are, of course, ants right where you live, and as you learn to watch for them, you will probably see mating flights and fertile queens there eventually.

This will be instructive: http://ants.yourwildlife.org/dr-eleanors-book-of-common-ants-of-new-york-city/.

And there's more if you use your browser to search ants New York City. Most of the work has been done in Manhattan, but is relevant for Queens and the entire urban area.

What works for me is checking spider webs around mating time. I found so many tetramorium E and crematogastor cerasi this way.

Camponotus not so much though.

Thanks again for all the info.  Right after this post I was looking under rocks after a football practice with my boys. I found a queen and a few workers. Since I'm a rookie I was not prepared to catch them.  I know learned a lesson and always have containers in my car and carry with me.  The ants were very small and bright orange and had a little white dot on queen. I went back but didn't find her.  I will practice patient and most likely have to wait till spring.  I have looked in acorn but that does seam like a tall task cause there are so many on the floor.

My amazon cart is full and ready to order all things I need! haha
