Hello, extremely new to ants here.
I just noticed our colony has been moving the larger pebbles from the sand into their food dish.
What would be the reason for this?
Thank you

What species are they?
As far as I know, behavior depends a lot on the species.

Well it usually is to cover the food up so that other creatures can't find it as easily.

If you have permits to ship pheidole californica to washington pls lmk

Keeping:

Solenopsis molesta

Pogonomyrmex occidentalis

Tetramorium immigrans

Camponotus modoc

Hello Dee0981;

It seems to me that they cover excess food so they can come back to it later. Some of my ants move food under cover for the same reason and also to protect it from others. Your ants may be slowing down for winter too and don’t require as much food, so they’re covering it up.

My father always said I had ants in my pants.
