Depending on the size of the formicarium, I would move my ants into a formicarium as soon as they can fit comfortably in it, not leaving too much space, or too little.

You can move ants into a terrarium at any time as they will shape the nest to their own size requirements.

The kind of nest would matter.

A stand alone plaster nest attached to an outworld, is when you can put a colony into too much space for them and have potential problems come up.
But if the colony lives in a terrarium/single enclosure, where they would create their own nest space in the terrarium dirt. Then it won't matter, they will not let their own nest pace be bigger than they like it to be. You can move them into that kind of setup anytime you want.


If you do have the separate nest with attached outworld situation, it is only the nest that needs to not get too big for them. The outworld can be as big as anything, it is inside the nest that they will not like too much empty open space around them.

Formicarium: At least 100 workers, preferably more. Large ants such as Camponotus are an exception, I would say 50 for them.

 

Terrarium: Any time. Throw founding queens in them and they'll probably do better than a test tube, honestly.
