Hi

I've kept native UK species for many years when younger, but I want to get an interesting spp for my sons. Problem with UK spp is they're either v docile dull and inactive, or aggressive with stings/sprays, so looking for something tropical half way between.

Something large that actively hunts live food but does not have a sting. Looking online Carpenter ants look a good choice, but which type is most active hunting? I don't think my boys would be interested watching ants collect seeds!

Most Carpenter ants are nocturnal and will come out mostly at night, if you want and active species that will bring insects in and occasionally collects seeds i would suggest an aphaenogaster species as they are always very active and grow extremely fast. I'm not sure if they are stinging but I've never been stung or bitten since they are too small.

Try Crematogaster or Tetramorium. Pheidole are highly active as well.

Ah OK thanks, was hoping for a larger species that hunts with no sting as looking up those suggestions they seem smaller.

Any idea what type of carpenter ant these are? Lovely colour pattern. Annoyingly doesn't say in description.
