Caught this ant 7/9/25 in Columbus, OH near a wooded area, river, and houses. 12mm in length. Wings are black tinted, which I have not seen before. I'm wondering if this is a C. pennsylvanicus drone. The gaster seems like a queen, but overall length is too short for a Camponotus queen (I think) and the head seems a bit small.

A species of Formica in the "fusca group" sensu Francoeur. F. subsericea is most likely but there is not enough detail visible to say for sure.

So you're saying this is likely a Formica queen (not a drone), correct?

It is a Formica queen, yes.
