I spotted a bunch of pogonomyrmex occidentalis colonies in the foothills right by my office. I assume these fly around July. What are the best places to look for queens? I am new to this and caught most of the queens in my driveway/sidewalks by my house (tertramotrium, formica, lasius, solenopsis thief ants). Where do I look for pogonomyrmex occidentalis queens in unpaved/wild environment?

I'm assuming you're from Utah since you mentioned the Utah Ant Keepers Facebook page in another post. If you already know where colonies are that's the best way to find them. July and August after the next big rainstorm/warm day is what I would watch for, as that's when they traditionally seem to fly in Utah. They are pretty prevalent in the state if you go anywhere out into BLM land. You can find them wandering around, or look for small holes that have been dug in the ground and bring a little spade or something to dig them up.
