Hello - I recently acquired a “Formica Subaenscens” colony from Jeff. The colony has around 30-50 workers, and a big egg pile. They came in a test tube and I moved them into a tubs and tube setup I made the other day. I plan on adding two more Formica species to this journal soon, as they have not flown in my area yet. The picture below has the queen and 1/3 of the workers.

Beautiful ants! Formica is a severely underrated genus, and I look forward to seeing their progress! There aren't enough detailed journals documenting large Formica colonies on this forum. I have a Formica pallidefulva colony that also has 50 workers and an argentea colony that looks quite similar to yours, so we can change that together.

Yesterday I received a young Formica Argentea colony with two workers and some eggs. I’m hoping I can get this colony back on track. My other Formica colony is doing good with some larvae and eggs now. I will also be making some other journals soon about my other ants.

The Argentea colony ended up dying due to some random mold that formed on the PVA sponge, I don’t know how the mold formed or if the sponge was contaminated with something. Although I did get a new Formica colony. Which I believe is Formica Francoeur. They have 3 workers, an egg pile and one larvae.
