I haven’t been active in the community for a while but, about a month ago, I received two Novomessor cockerelli queens from Brad. So why not start a journal. I’ll provide updates whenever possible.

So far, they’re doing fine. One queen is significantly more productive than the other, with a larger brood pile and more workers. The other is a bit behind, but it’s doing alright.

The first queen has a total of 7 workers (not all are visible in the photo). I plan to move this colony into a nest in the next few days or weeks.

Second queen, 2 workers total.

The colony I got from you a while ago is great they have around 50 workers now! Also, Tyr_ Ant these ants are my favorite colony though it seems like your feeding then a little much for their size.

I can see why you would say that, but these novos have a crazy appetite, and at this point they’re eating up entire mealworms within a couple days. Also congrats on your colony reaching 50 workers.

Update #2

It’s been a week since I made an update, and so far the larger colony has surpassed the size of their test tube, and it has become increasingly harder to feed them. Which is why I am transferring them into a tubs and tubes setup. They’ve also gained 2 extra workers and have three to four pupae that are about to eclose, while also maintaining a decent brood pile.

The second colony, on the other hand, had a worker pass away, leaving the queen with two remaining workers and a below-average brood pile. Since their water is running low, eventually, I will have to transfer them into a new test tube soon. Although this colony has a very high appetite for its size, I’m hoping they will catch up to the other one soon.

Colony #1 (Brood is scattered around not all are visible)

Didn’t know novos did this, but they like to put their larva inside prey, and from there they eat it from the inside out. Seems interesting.

Colony #2

At the very least, they have a reasonably sized egg pile.

Excellent job and well documented journal, I look forward to hearing about the future of these colonies!
