Hey everyone I'm new to the ant colony life/hobby. Can anyone name this type of ant? I believe they're from Northern California sorry I don't have much info just that I might buy them.

Hard to say anything definitively without clearer photos and/or location, but those seem like they may be fire ants Solenopsis queens, but if actually in NorCal then would have to be S. xyloni, which they don't look like.

it might be some type of pheidole, also, I agree with Mettcollsuss. S. xyloni queens have smaller gasters then them, and are not polygnous.

Where are you buying them?

What state are you in? Ants are considered agricultural pests and thus are under USDA-APHIS regulations, they cannot legally be transported across state lines without a PPQ-526 permits. If you want to buy ants they'll have to either come from within your state or from one of the handful of vendors that have sales permits.

I doubt those would be S. invicta, could they be a species of Crematogaster?

I'm in northern California. I've been looking to buy a few queens then past couple days.

Those aren’t Solenopsis, trust me. Pheidole seems more likely. I wouldn’t buy from a seller who can’t identify the ants they’re selling. If they were Solenopsis they would be illegal to buy, especially if the seller isn’t in your state, but illegal even if he is.

Ants are small creatures... but together... they can rule the world.

More photos would help but I'm pretty confident those are indeed fire ant Solenopsis.

Only legal fire ant that gets that dark is S. richteri, which is certainly not as brown as those ants.
I have some Solenopsis queens in a box I can go examine if you don’t trust me.
