they began spinning because they're in the new nest, having access to substrate in the nest is what did it, the first gen had cocooned pupae though

One question- I saw a nude pupae without a cocoon on one of the pictures- I always thought Formica had cocoons?

I heard on another journal that Formica pupae do not immediately build a cocoon when they pupate.

I heard on another journal that Formica pupae do not immediately build a cocoon when they pupate.
Not sure how that works, since only the last stage larvae have the spinner glands and can produce silk, or am I wrong?

it's usually a 50/50 split between cocooned and non cocooned pupae, and Formica is currently in the process of phasing out cocoons

Most of the pupae is also formica pacifica pupae that I gave them
