Found these last night in Alexandria Virginia. 16Aug23. A little under 1cm in length. Caught them around 2300. Pretty fast movers and we’re found digging together

Lasius maybe Brevicornis because they were digging together but could be nr neoniger.

Looks like neoniger to me. I know they had massive flight in our area yesterday. Separate those queens, by the way.

Looks like neoniger to me. I know they had massive flight in our area yesterday. Separate those queens, by the way.

Thank y’all. I’m not very good at identifying them yet but I’ll get there. Just caught another today with an aspirator. Should have had a fuel filter on it because it sprayed something. Should I post the pic here or make a new thread?

Caught under a piece of broken concrete. Pretty fast but stood her ground and guarded her cocoon and eggs. About 1.4 cm long.

Did you collect her cocoon and eggs? It's always a bad idea to leave a queen's brood behind when collecting them from underneath rocks and wood.
Is it just me that likes the look of ant brood? It just reminds of you how well an ant colony is doing.

Yes I collected the cocoon and eggs as well. Lost about 3 of the eggs out of what looks like 10 since they stuck to the aspirator tube due to whatever she sprayed when I got her. Took me about an hour of trying to carefully remove them but it was done. I can take another picture of her in the test tube when I get some food down
