That is too bad.

I often have problems moving colonies unless the cotton is 100% dried out.

Queen is about 7mm, workers are about 3mm

Maybe I have been lucky but I have never forced my Tetramorium to hibernate and sometimes added a heating pad under the tank in winter. They never stop producing all year. They are kept in soil so I can view the sides and the bottom of the tank which is Always covered with eggs/larvae. sorry to hear how this turned out for you...
