Just a warning, first pic is the dead bird I was cleaning up. It's not graphic, just some feathers.

  1. Location: Minneapolis
  2. Date: 6/4/22
  3. Habitat: hiding under a leaf ... noticed a shiny black thing moving while i was putting an obliterated bird in a trash bag. I think a cat ate the bird.
  4. Length: about half inch / 13 mm
  5. Coloration: all black with striping on the gaster
  6. Distinguishing: huge head. My amateur guess is camponotus due to this feature.
  7. Anything else distinctive: n/a
  8. Nest: n/a
  9. Nuptial: n/a

Thanks a lot, this is so helpful to know what conditions to provide. This is my first queen ever so I'm quite pumped. Now it makes sense why it escaped the super humid 2oz container I put it in, after seeing that this type doesn't like much moisture. Will be reading a lot while trying not to peek at it!

I agree with Canadian anter. What part if Minnesota do you live in? I live next to La crescent.
