I found a very small queen ant on my back deck in eastern Connecticut on July 26th. It definitely flew that day because it took it's wings off right in front of me.

It's no more than 1/4 inch long. When I first found it, it was probably around 3/16 of an inch (5mm or so).

The head is darker than the rest of the body. The head was a dark brown or black and the body was a lighter brown or tan.

It started laying eggs within a few days and has been tending them for almost a month now. Pictures attached. It's hard to get a focused close up shot through the test tube but let me know if these pictures don't narrow it down.

Is this perhaps solenopsis molesta?

Thanks!

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

If I remember correctly from journals about S. molesta, they don't grow slowly at all.
