so yesterday i was flipping rocks and found a formica founding queen i was so excited because formica arent the most common ants where i live she had brood i aspirated her but it was worth the pain i had her and her brood, today i moved her into a testube setup so cross your fingers that thing queen gets workers! :)

I currently have a 10 worker colony of a unidentified formica sp, several queens without brood, a 1 queen 1 worker colony, and that's about it

Well I had to move the colony out of the formiscqarium because they wouldn't to in the outworld so I moved them into a mini-hearth they stayed there for a while but then they started slowly dieing so I moved them into a texture in hopes the queen would start laying eggs but it was a mistake and the queen died

Meanwhile one of my queens I suspected to be infertile decided to lay like six eggs and I was skeptical for a while but now she has 2 larvae and 3 eggs(losing only one egg is a record for me and Formica for egg to larva I mean) the reason there is no substrate is that I expected her not to lay any eggs so I didn't give her substrate and I'm too scared to move her because I'm afraid if I do she will eat them or I will accidentally squish them

the queen ended up getting a worker and it failed to eclose same thing happened again, and then again but instead of it failing she ate it so this queen is a failure. But I caught a Formica pallidefulva queen on fathers day who by now has laid 4 eggs, and a 8-12 queen(I took 6 queens) 50-100 worker(I took like 30) colony of Formica accreta colony in Colorado Springs which is doing pretty good.unknown.png

i would encourage checking on your formica colonies as little as possible, as that seems to decrease dying rates. they are very touchy ants
