I have my camponotus pennsylvanicus in a tarheels large talus formicarium with the watering trowl inside the nesting cavity, how often should I hydrate the nest? how much of the nest needs to be hydrated? Is there a specific humidity level for camponotus pennsylvanicus?

I have been keeping the trowl full but no condensation seems to build up to indicate any sort of moisture level. I tried Hydrating the whole formicarium but mold started to grow on the THA substrate.

Is there anyway to tell if they are to dry, without a hydrometre?

To answer part of your question, Camponotus pennsylvanicus tend to like a dryer nest. Around 20% - 40% max humidity.

I often find them nesting in living trees with dead branches.

I do not have a talus, maybe someone else can be of more help :)
