Acton is good if you're looking for semitestaceus.

Every mountain forest and a lot of the desert; it all depends on the species you are trying to go after.

If you're around the LA area, Santa Clarita Woodlands Park is great place to find Camponotus. You can find them throughout the park but I've seen a lot of nests right at start of the trails near the parking area. They nest in the dirt here and you can see their entrance holes along the edges of the trails, it gets pretty hot during the day so you'll start to see em around sunset. It's a great place for anting in general I've seen so many different species there.
