I had told a few co-workers about my ant keeping hobby. One of them found a C. novaeboracensis queen while on his break and gave her to me. I got her home and promptly set her up with a THA gensis test tube insert.

So I find it only fitting to name her after him. Meet queen Lorenzi!

Young ant keeper with a decent amount of knowledge on local ant species.

YouTube: https://m.youtube.co...uKsahGliSH7EqOQ (It's pretty dead. Might upload again soon, don't expect my voice to sound the same though.)

Currently kept ant species, favorites have a star in front of their names (NOT in alphabetical order, also may be outdated sometimes): ★ Camponotus irritans inferior, ★ Ooceraea biroi, Pheidole parva, ★ Nylanderia sp., ★ Paraparatrechina tapinomoides, Platythyrea sp., Anochetus sp., Colobopsis sp. (cylindrica group), ★ Crematogaster ferrarii, Polyrhachis (Myrma) cf. pruinosa, Polyrhachis (Cyrtomyrma) laevissima, Tapinoma sp. (formerly Zatapinoma)

Death count: Probably over a hundred individual queens and colonies by now. I cannot recall whatsoever.

Queen Lorenzi has been busy already. She laid at least 5 eggs and put them in a neat pile. :D

I got this insert with my Pogonomyrmex colony from THA. I really like it, and there is mesh that presses up against the water cotton ball keeps them from flooding the test tube. Would be great for species that like to do that. (S. molesta for instance.) I plan on ordering some more of these, to use with Queens I want to keep for myself.

This queen had some rough luck to begin with, for whatever reason her first two workers failed to enclose properly. However we now have our first official worker! I expect her other two pupae will enclose in the next few days. She also has a second batch of eggs, some of which are larvae already. I rewarded her with a small fruit fly. (Which was consumed rapidly.) I wasn't able to get a photo last night, but I will try and get one tonight when I give them a little ant nectar.  (y)

As of the 16th, we have 3 workers! I expect at least one more to enclose soon. She also has laid another two batches of eggs!

My Nova colony... all the workers took off or died.  I'm guessing they escaped somehow, which still puzzles me.   Anyway, I gave her some brood from my Chromiodes (sp is horrible) and she's caring for them really well.  I expect some workers soon.   Hopefully this will help her recover as she is gorgeous.
Thanks for posting this journal!  I'll watch it closely to assist in my own rearing.

Currently still at 3 workers, we have 5 pupae that I can see, some larvae, and plenty of eggs.

This queen is doing alright, but had another worker fail to enclose recently. I don't know what the issue is, the brood pile looks healthy, and she has 3 workers... Bad genetics maybe? Pretty sure I'm doing alright with her needs. Just strange.  :(

So since I had moved the well off Modoc queen into a proper nest, I hooked these gals up to a AC test tube portal to feed them easier. Apparently this is what they needed. I guess they got too stressed out when I opened their test tube or something. Low and behold, we now have 6 workers, with more on the way!

Yes, I plan on moving them to a fallen fortress once I get my Pogonomyrmex their Labyrinth. Currently this colony is at 9 workers. So we aren't quite ready to move out yet.
