Nice! Would you recommend putting these queens together? I just caught a few and was wondering what to do with them. 


Ants are Pets, not Pests.

-Formica podzolica

-Monomorium spp.

I know. I was just wondering if they tolerated 3+ queens through the colony's life cycle, and not just through the founding stage.  


Ants are Pets, not Pests.

Thanks, I didn't know that. Do you know if this species is pleometrosis? (totally didn't copy and past that) I've tried to house them together before and they never got along, so I separated them.

One of the most commonly mistaken terms. I was guilty of it myself for a while.

 

Nice to see they have gotten larvae so quickly! Hopefully they don't just randomly die out like many colonies of this species do.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

They are pleo. Works best when you collect them all in the same area.

 

P. calis fly by the thousands, and it's always best to group them in threes to increase your chance of success. I've done this year after year and it works. By the second year the colony usually kills off all but one queen.

Is it practical to divide up the colony once they get workers?
