New photo from this morning. Last night I had an interesting experience changing one of the colonies water feeders. I took the lid off the outworld carefully as I normally do... But the whole colony went nuts! They were running all over the place and acting pretty aggressive.

My Pogonomyrmex are sensitive to certain kind of vibrations. And they have seemed to learn.

They all run out when I take the lid off but don't seem panicked they just know food might fall from the sky.

Once I attached a clip on light to the table they were on and the HATED it. But I can move them and they don't care. IDK.

I'm thinking I must have shifted their fallen fortress or something while taking off the lid. They calmed down after a bit.

Last week I counted 55 workers roughly. Not sure where we are now. I will try and get a headcount tomorrow if I can.

I know I update this colony log a lot, but I enjoy them the most at the moment, and they are growing pretty nicely. I'm expecting I will definitely have to get them a new home before they go into diapause this winter.

This colony is still moving right along. They get so excited any time I add food to their outworld!

Have you tried live fruit flies? I bet it would be cool to watch them hunt. I’m sure they’d be able to catch them too

I freeze all my feeder insects as a precaution. However they do jump on and sting the fruit flies anyways.

Watching my Camponotus chase fruit flies is pretty hilarious.  They're HORRIBLE at it.   Watching them hunt pinhead crickets is even funnier.  They lunge, the cricket leaps and you can see their tiny ant brains thinking "Where did it go???"   They look around, dumbfounded.   Really the only thing I don't feed live are dubia and mealworms, as I don't want them escaping into the outworld in general and establishing there.

Snapped a photo last night. Hard to believe this colony started with under 20 workers when I got them.

Not much to report over the last few days. Other than this colony continues to thrive.

It's becoming quite the task to spot the queen sometimes. She blends in with her larger works pretty easily. Also the colony has become large enough that I've completely given up on using nestmates. Workers would try to charge out when I tried to change it. I've since just put two water feeders in their outworld.
