Which species? Colorado's P. occidentalis haven't flown recently, I can say that for certain.

That’s so weird, I went anting and found not a single queen, not even any workers

Pogonomyrmex subdentatus is not common in the South Bay. I've only found them in VERY isolated pockets in the Santa Cruz mountains, and all over the East bay (Fremont and further).

If we all live in the south bay, we should get together and go anting sometime!  I also live in Sunnyvale.

Bump, looking for colonies with 5+ workers or multiple single queens (they don't have to be poly)

if your interested in catching a queen, I highly recommend to go to Griffith park. i went 2 weeks ago and there where Pogonomyrmex Californicus and Barbatus E V E R Y W H E R E. the higher you got in elevation, the more you saw. if you do end up going, keep an eye out for Camponotus Sansabeanus cause they where also pretty abundant. also, raid the container store of all of their vials cause your gonna need every single one.

keep in mind that i did go a few weeks ago, so not sure if the same activity is still going on, but Pogonomyrmex flights should be starting up full throttle in may.

according to antwiki, they are dubious. i have seen lots of these girls at local parks and yards, and i have looked at lots of pics of barbatus and they match. where does it say they are not native to CA?

They're dubious due to false IDs. For Pogonomyrmex species it's not wise to ID off color, since some tend to look exactly the same except for tiny differences.
