This little journal has an unusual start.

My new acorn ant colony had its start out in nature living in the bark of a dead tree that grew some pretty mosses on it.
Naturally I wanted to grab some for the setup of my big red manica ants to decorate a cave.

At fist I saw a queen running around diving into what I thought to be her founding chamber. I could ID her as a curvispinosus queen. I didn't kill her as I liked this addition to make things more interesting.

Little did I know it wasn't just a queen but a mature colony. That became obvious when they bravely started grabbing sugar water standing between ants that would kill them on sight. They will have mentions in my other journal but I think they deserve their own.

Lucky! Whenever I go to tennessee, I look everywhere in my local park in every single acorn, and don't find anything..... Where do you live? And why would the queen be out from the colony?

I'm pretty sure they are in Europe since they have Messor. You shouldn't try to take ants from another state, though. It isn't just buying them from other states that is illegal.

I don't take them back with me.

But they mentioned something about acorn ants so I thought about how much I failed trying to find a colony of them.

I live in western austria.
They are very common where I live.
If you're in a forest near a creek or body of water you'll find tons of them
