Why such a high opinion of Dorymyrmex? I’ve been a forum member for a few years and kept a few small colonies but I still consider my self an ant keeping beginner.dorymyrmex = gold
the best ant there is.

They are the most valuable species ever. More valuable than Myrmecocystus

The never ceasing wonders of forum jokes from years and years ago. In all seriousness, however, this species is far better than its *useless good for nothing* cousin Dormyrmex insanus. Hopefully this queen won't just die randomly like most colonies of this genus.
Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.
However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:
Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Hmm I can’t tell if I’m being trolled. Also, I feel like I’m either too young or too old to know what GOAT means haha

I shall spill the beans. Dorymyrmex have become a running joke, especially in California, since most people think they are incredibly boring*especially nurbs*, as D. insanus are. D. bicolor are, however, considerably better in my opinion, with them having nice coloration, and being larger.

Haha ok thanks. I’m currently without a colony so I’m just happy to have a new queen. Dorymyrmex is a new species for me.

Be careful around mold. My Dorymyrmex insanus queen had a mold outbreak in her test tube, but instead of moving into the minihearth I connected her to she just stayed in the tube while all of her workers died from the outbreak.

Ants I have:
1 Formica fusca group- 0 workers
1 Tetramorium immigrans colony-20 workers
1 Dorymyrmex insanus- 1 queen, used to have workers
1 large P. occidentalis colony- around 50 workers, plenty of brood

Thanks for the tip. I have her in a test tube now and a mini hearth for when she’s ready.

I was being completely serious. I hold Dorymyrmex bicolor in the highest of regard. They very much do not deserve their "boring" reputation. Just have a look at some of my videos of my past colonies of this species on my youtube, they have some really interesting behaviors.
