Went looking for Ca02 today. Stricky said they might fly so I went to a local trail. Saw lots of some sort of Camponotus species. They have big majors and were everywhere. I found this queen at around 6pm. The queen isn't Ca02 but what is she?

I would guess either vicinus or dumetorum. Not sure you can go down to species without really close-up images.


Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Yeah. I looked at those. The only thing it mentioned is something about some hairs which are only present on vicinus. If I understood it correctly. "Hairs and pubescence as in the typical vicinus, yellow, the former absent on the cheeks"

I can see what appears to be pubescence near the mandibular insertions, dumetorum seems like a batter match. But yeah improved photos are needed to confirm.

I'm going to agree with dumetorum. Not 100% sure, but , as ponerinecat said, their does appear to be more hairs on the malar region near the mandible than is seen in vicinus.

If you look closely at the second image, there is a tuft of hair, albeit rather blurry, on the “cheeks” of the ant.

If you zoom in on the left ‘cheek’ of the second photo there’s a pretty clear tuft of hair, so I think it’s dumetorum. I’m still pretty bad at identification however.

Ants I have:

1 Formica fusca group- 0 workers

1 Tetramorium immigrans colony-20 workers

1 Dorymyrmex insanus- 1 queen, used to have workers

 

1 large P. occidentalis colony- around 50 workers, plenty of brood
