Hi FC!

Anyone know of any materials to decorate formicariums?  Specifically outworlds.  I can't find something small but with the same quality of THA...  I don't know where he finds those!  Any ideas are appreciated.

Are you talking about fake plants, or rocks, or sand or all of them? You can find anything on amazon and eBay. I have almost bought some small fake fake plants myself a few times form amazon. Honestly though, I find my ants do great with just sand on top of a thin plaster base.

Mostly fake plants.  I already have rocks in mind, and I have sand, I just need plants.  Thanks!

I just started experimenting with creating outworlds capable of housing real plants. i don't know if that interests you.

Working with callisia repens (turtle vine), it seems super hardy and easy to grow.

Interesting!!!  That's a really cool idea.  You think you could PM me your progress if you don't have a thread on it?  If you don't want to that's fine but I would be interested in seeing your progress!  Not trying to copy you, just curious.  Never seen this idea!

I really gotta start my own journal for stuff I try to make. I just starting truly thinking about it over the last couple days, I have a plant planted in a tiny pot atm in my tetra outworld. I will probably create a thread all about my stuff at some point and let you know.

I found a good start at my local big box pet store. Lots of decorations you can look and hold in hand to inspect. I ended up picking up fake plants for reptiles and aquariums and I just trimmed off a 'bud' or 'stem' and used that for outworld usage. One fake plant can fit many outworlds in this manner. I'm testing out some small decorations made to fit small outworlds myself and finding out what looks 'naturalistic' enough for what I like observing the ants to use. I'm testing out plaster over carved foam with some fake plants to accentuate them and some variety of other materials too.

Devi, go to Hobby Lobby! Michael’s is pretty good and you can even find stuff at Dollar Tree.

I have a lot of houseplants, so I don't think I will ever decorate with plastic ones. It feels like too much of a betrayal... 

 

I could see live plants working in an outworld, but it would definitely require being near a window or a grow light. My current bag of decorations includes varied rock/crystals, pieces of coral, shells, dried lichens and mosses, sea glass, interesting twigs and dried plants. Still trying to figure out how I want to use them though. All free, and all collected over several years. I just pick up interesting looking items from time to time in nature.
