I'm sure you know about this, but just in case: https://www.wardsci....otermopsis-sp-i

Comes with more Zoots than Termitat does, for a fraction of the cost (though, I do think the Termitat is amazing and a good deal mostly because of the great design and aesthetics)

that's cool, but its kind of risky because it might come with workers and soldiers and not nymphs. Unless you have experience about that.

Ants I am keeping:

none for now, planning on being more active this year

also, what about these? https://www.carolina...f-100/143736.pr

seems like a better deal...

Those Carolina Scientific termites you posted are Reticulitermes -- subterranean termites. The Ward Scientific Zootermopsis probably do come with both workers and soldiers -- while the soldiers are typically terminally differentiated, the "workers" are not a simple class like that. There will probably be both larvae and nymphs -- nymphs can molt into both primary and secondary reproductives (read: queens and kings), while the larvae will eventually molt into nymphs or soldiers. I think it's actually a bit more complicated than that, but that's my understanding of the Zootermopsis caste system!

All that to say, if you order the Ward Scientific Zoots they should eventually develop reproductives

Once I get a job and can actually afford to blow $40 on termites that aren't guaranteed to produce reproductives, I hope to maybe try both of these. For now I gotta stick with free termites. However, if someone in CA catches some Zoot alates I'll probably buy some.

Haha very fair. $40 (+ shipping I assume) is definitely not nothing! imo drywoods are the best anyway :) best of luck with the job hunt!

Sad update. They are doing horribly. Lots are dying. Some look really flat so it may be a moisture issue. Gave them water and more ventilation. Hopefully the recover.

Wait a second, I can collect workers and they will turn into reproductives???  Does this mean I can get a colony from just workers I collect?  (I would reply to the post but the dudes banned)

Often times yes. These species of termites doesn't even have workers. They have nymphs that all are on the way to becoming reproductives or soldiers.

not necessarily. I think you would need more then a couple of workers because then the workers would notice that their queen and king was gone and it would make themselves become the kings and queens as secondary reproductives. for that to happen, you probably need more than a couple workers, and probably a portion of a colony.
