Here is an image of a worker form one of my colonies. I'm 50% sure its camponuts hyatti. I caught 2 queens, both found in rotting wood. If you can make out details with these pictures, any help would be appreciated.

Maybe a more experienced keeper could ID with this, but do you have queen/worker (live) pics?

I can't really focus on the ants that well, but here's a pic:

You are correct, Camponotus hyatti.

Is there any way we cannot prove this is not nearcticus from these pictures?

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

You are correct, Camponotus hyatti.

Ok good to be sure. Here is another species. Jet black with red legs, very large.  This queen has a clump light brown/orange larvae too. Also found in another dead log:

I think the one you just posted is C. modoc.

The earlier one could be any myrmentoma group Camponotus found in Utah. The differences between the species require good macro shots to affirmatively ID. Going off of AntWeb, the possibilities are: C. discolor, C. hyatti, C. essigi. Care should be the same regardless.

C. nearcticus is also present in Utah. I believe the first is most like to be the former, or Camponotus hyatti.
