Nice article about ants' seed dispersal contributions to plant diversity, and the need for nesting sites.

Specifically calls out Aphaenogaster.

'Even in areas cleared decades ago, her team found higher concentrations of invasive earthworms and lower concentrations of seed-dispersing ants than in forests that were never cleared. Earthworms break down fallen leaves and organic debris, possibly leaving too little cover for ants. “This suggests that there are huge impacts of past land use that probably run deeper than we previously suspected,” Stuble says. Those impacts could explain why secondary forests lack dense undergrowth, and why plants that rely on ants to disperse their seeds are scarce there.'

I am currently cold stratifying bloodroot seeds I collected last May in the hopes they will germinate this spring.

Good luck! I follow your plant adventures with interest. I have an allotment with lots of space for native plants for the insects etc. The ants are especially happy as the previous keeper poisoned them while we feed them. I do take brood sometimes, for parasites or struggling queens. There's one L. niger colony that warms the brood in a pot Buddha head. Almost a haiku lol.

Excellent! Feel free to share your experiences with native plants in my journal. I’m cautiously optimistic for my bloodroot seeds as I’ve honed my technique with spring ephemerals over many years. I may do a cartwheel if they germinate.

and now people realize clearing forests displaces ants and leads to invasive species. that took a while...

Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. -Proverbs 6: 6-8

All I can say is I love that people are trying to save or heal the broken land.

And I've done my share of bad stuff when I was younger so I just hope my life is a net positive for the planet in the long run!
