I've noticed that a lot of people on the forum are in california, so I wonder if maybe we should all start a discord server together! reply if you think this is a good Idea :D

most people are from california, just all of them are not active. The antsdakota discord server does have a place for each state to chat with each other, if you wanted to use that.

it is not used much yet, but if you join our mods will ask you where you are from, and only people from that state can chat in that chat, excluding mods.

Ha ha! At the outset it is quite time consuming, but if you have a good group of people it makes it all worth it.

Check your messages, I already answered that ;).

That's a good idea! We have thought about it, we would just need to be careful because we do discuss sensitive topics and locale information, and don't want anything going out to the wrong people.

Yeah the much-maligned AAK discord server has a california channel (say what you will, AAK is generally still the biggest American discord community as far as I know) and the California-only discord server members are mostly all also on AAK, aside from those who either got banned or got too angry with AAK. There's so much drama in the Cali discord ant community, though (and I mean on any server ... since the same people are usually involved lol). I'm on 3 servers (AAK, Cali only, Ants Dakota) and for the MOST part I like the people on all of them - though I can seriously live without the drama.

Just join all three (or whatever others there are) and see where you want to hang out.

At this point, I personally don't use Discord much. We tested it for the ICSC, and I joined a few other servers just to see what it's like, and yes, I may be painting with too broad a brush, but I found the majority of invertebrate-themed servers just to be awash with unnecessary dramatics, toxicity, and strong language. A friend once told me you shouldn't be in this hobby to be making enemies or slandering, which is unfortunately the norm in many groups (I'll stay away from AAK discussion as I don't know much about it).

Just my personal experience, and I'm sure there are plenty of great servers out there, but I much prefer the (relatively) laid-back, clean approach of most invertebrate forums and local clubs.

Thanks,

Yes, I am trying to stay away from a few discord communities because they are pretty toxic and tried to cause fights with me every day. But there are a few that I like and have pretty friendly people in (AntsDakota Ant Keeping Server).
