Good day everyone,

I just recently started following the hobby, and I am very enthused about ant keeping. I live in southern California and I've been looking at a number of species and was amazed at the diversity here.  I've been lurking in the wings for a few days and have been eagerly reading up on a multitude of different aspects of ant keeping.  I have yet to decide on a species, but I'd like to start with a beginner species that will eventually be active during the day.  I have purchased a Mini Hearth from Tar Heel ants for use in the future.

I'm open to suggestions from the more experienced keepers here in regards to species. I'm interested in something like Pogonomyrmex subnitidus.

Thanks for having me,

All the best,

Oliver

Welcome to the forum! I hope that you can increase your knowledge about antkeeping here!

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).
