my friend just got into ant keeping and he is keeping trap jaw ants currently and he was wondering if a test and tubes set up is better than a mini hearth with substrate?

Assuming you mean Odontomachus, I'd recommend a test tube with substrate for a solo queen, and then a THA inception chamber or horizontal mini hearth for their next nest. Odontomachus cannot climb smooth surfaces, so getting to a mini hearth's vertical outworld would be difficult. Thus the side-connecting outworld is a great solution to that problem. I generally think a mini hearth would be too large for a solo queen, although I'm sure it's doable. But like I said, personally I'd just start them in a tube with substrate.

Is he in your state, or do he live further south? If he is in Virginia may I inquire where he got these ants?

In terms of your question, I agree with a test tube, as it's a more confined space. However a Mini Hearth would still work.
