Myrmecocystus are supposedly really easy to keep, and the repletes are pretty easy to make as well. Hard part seems to be founding.

I recently started feeding my M. mexicanus Pogonomyrmex workers and they really love them probably more t hen any other food I feed. With most foods they typically mill around it for awhile then they they will think about maybe eating it and then finally drag it to the nest. With the Pogonomyrmex workers they instantly drag it into the nest and put it on the larvae pile.

Has anyone ever kept hibernating Myrmecocystus?? There is a chance of me getting some of those when I go to the Eastern Sierras fairly soon.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies.

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Does anyone in SoCal know anything about flights this year? Would they just not fly since there isn't no rain?

There is large variance between the species. M. mimicus is fairly easy in the founding stage. They are super easy once the colony reaches 10-15 workers. M. mexicanus is much more troublesome in the founding stage. I only caught one queen. She didn’t make it.
