I found one of these guys Saturday night when I was looking for Mexicanus. It is very small compared to Mexicanus. It is in a box with all the other pots I found that night so I'm not able to get a picture of it. Hopefully I'm able to get a colony out of it but it's only one queen so my chances are low.

Good luck! Also note that 'Navajo' and 'Mexicanus' should not be capitalized.

Ah ok, I'll make sure to fix that in the future

Update 10-16-20

This queen got its first workers. It has a nice pile of brood with both a good amount of pupae, larvae and eggs. When all the pupae hatch I will be moving them into a mini hearth.

There was plenty of rain this year, the only reason why I have Myrmecocystus

Not down where I'm at and I couldn't drive super far. I watched your area get drenched. Ocotillo and Anza Borrego where I was going to go didn't get any rain.

Is there a reason why most people keeping Myrmecocystus have sand in the tube? Do they need it to spin cocoons?

Yeah, without the sand the larvae can't pupate. I had a few where the sand was too wet so they had naked pupae.

Update 1-26-21
These died on Thanksgiving for reasons I am not sure of. The day before everything looked just fine with no problems. Next day the queen was on its back dead. I didn't want to update the journal because it makes me very angry think about the fact that these died.
