I also thought about it, since in German ant keeping community I noticed the same trend. A lot less people use traditional forums and especially people that are new to ant keeping seem to prefer a facebook group.

  • Almost everybody has a facebook account, while you have to create an account in order to post something in forums.
  • No categories: You don't have to think where to post your topic. Just post it.
  • You don't have to worry about giving your topic a meaningful title.
  • Better integration with smartphones: Your phone will notify you if you get an answer.

The biggest problem with private facebook groups is: All knowledge there is kept secret, nobody will find it via google, so only people who are already members of that group are able to benefit from it.

->The only thing I'd like to see, although it's probably not possible, is a notification on facebook when there is an updated thread or a personal message to read on formiculture.com.  Other than that, there's nothing I would wish for, or even use if it were available.

That was actually something one of the old mods (wook) and I were looking into shortly after starting the forum. The problem was that there was no way to do it because of the way Facebook handles their logins. Twitter on the other hand did have a way, and there happened to be a way to get Twitter to automatically post to Facebook. So, if we set it up to post to Twitter, we could then have it also post to Facebook. It's been so long though, I can't even find the websites this information was on.

Doesn't Facebook have a really great API?  I could hire an Indian and we can get this knocked out in a weekend ;~)

I learned about this by reading through developer discussions, so no matter who you hire, they will all have the same problem. It's not about their API, it's about the way Facebook handles logging in--something about their login token. Having an application always able to post on behalf of a Facebook user all by itself simply was not possible. I have not looked into this lately, so I don't know if it has changed. In looking for the old material I read before, I notice that there is still no plugin for this functionality, so I am led to believe it hasn't.

That's a very good point that I never thought about before.
