On black star canyon trail at around 10 pm solenopsis molesta had a huge flight. I had no idea they were polygonous and I only had 1 test tube left and put two queens in that test tube. I know they mated because I saw them mate. I could have stayed 5 more minutes and had 20 queens.   :facepalm:Well... now I know.

They also interbreed. As they say, keeping it in the family.

4 x Solenopsis xyloni (Fire ant) colonies.

2 x Veromessor andrei (Seed-harvester ant) colonies.

19 x Pogonomyrmex subnitidus (Seed-harvester ant) colonies + 3 x Pogonomyrmex (ID uncertain) colonies

16 x Linepithema humile (Argentine ant) colonies.

1 x Unknown Formicidae colony.

1 x Tapinoma sessile (Odorous house ant) colony.

1 x Camponotus fragilis (Carpenter/wood ant) colony + 1 x Camponotus sansabeanus (Carpenter/wood ant) colony.

1 x Solenopsis molesta (Thief ant) colony.

These queens only have a batch of eggs no larva yet.

They may be infertile/unmated.  Mine got larvae about a week after eggs were laid.


Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

I have seen some mate and do nothing at all. Those are the truly infertile ones.

I'm seeing larva now. So hopefully they are fertilized. Other than that nothing has been going on.

I have a molesta colony of 11 queens in a test tube, and they have just laid eggs.  Hoping for larvae soon!  I will be following this. :)

These queens fought and died sometime around a week ago. I wasn't there to see it or I would have separated them.
