Apparently I found some Temnothorax queens. They swarmed my flashlight and I grabbed some. This was at Mission Trails. I thought these were Pheidole so I put them on a heating cable. Should I take them off? Do they need an acorn? Are these parasitic? I don't know much about how to care for them.

Pretty sure they are claustral, so you don't have to.

Ants I have: Tapinoma sessile(2 queen colony). RED MORPH Camponotus neacticus(now has pupae!), Tetramorium immigrans (x3), Aphaenogaster sp, Temnothorax sp, Brachymyrmex sp.   possibly infertile   :(,  Ponera pennsylvanica, and Pheidole morrisi!  :yahoo: 

 

Other insects: Polistes sp. Queen

                    

Ants I need: Pheidole sp., Trachymyrmex sp., Crematogaster cerasi , Dorymyrmex sp. Most wanted: Pheidole morrisii

Nonparasitic, and aren’t picky about nests. Highly polygynous and fully claustral.

Most wild Temnothorax colonies are monogyne, but in captivity and in the wild sometimes they are polygynous.

I love Temnothorax! You will have a ton of fun keeping them. In my experience, they tend to not eat that much and are rather slow growing, and of course – stay in relatively low numbers. However, they are a fun and relaxing genus to keep and never grow out of hand like some species (cough COUGH Tetramorium immigrans, Crematogaster spp., Tapinoma spp., etc,). :D

Mine really enjoyed termites and honey.


Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

I gave some that I'm pretty sure didn't mate a test tube with a hollow twig. They all moved in and now have eggs??
