Oh and new way to kill your ants: let them fight other ants.

I lost another M. mexicanus, the crucial adopted nanitic, probably because she fought and killed another M. mexicanus a couple days ago.

Similarly, when Tetramorium escaped and invaded other ant colonies, there was a high casualty rate up to 3+ days later.

P.S. I am not advocating ant fights. It just happened unexpectedly a few times :(

for me it would be I gave them too large of a formicarium, thus causing them to pile up garbage, which lead to fatal mold outbreaks that decimated their population every time it hit :c

Uhh... Me? Not really. They mostly just weaken and die. I think my plastic test tubes have some toxic fumes or something. My Tetras died because I didn't bring them to my cabin upstate and they probably got dehydrated and starved. My Mini Hearth never came with a syringe, and when I asked for one Mack gave me one with no needle

most of my early ants died because i moved them into a formicarium too early, and they did not have enough water.

Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. -Proverbs 6: 6-8

I once had a Pogonomyrmex occidentalis colony who's queen died from stress alone.  The table I had them was shaky-ish, but apparently enough to kill them.  Now I only use sturdy furniture (two stools, a bookcase, and a bedside table I made in TechEd).  But yeah, from other people's experiences I've seen that they're just really sensitive, since I kept them heated and they had moisture-o-plenty.  I'm ordered another colony a few weeks back, no clue on when they're going to arrive.

So yeah if you have P. occidentalis keep in mind that they're sensitive (so quirky smh)

Being C. pennsylvanicus queens

And unfortunately I've lost three or four workers from a couple different colonies to various forms of stuck-in-sugar accidents.

I need to update my journal with this info, but my C. sansabeanus colony constantly walks through their byFormica nectar, and 2 have died after they got stuck. I'm not sure what happened to the liquid feeders I ordered, but not having them is taking its toll on the colony.

That's a big bummer. It definitely turns crazy sticky once it dries.
