What are your favorite ant species? Does not matter if you don’t keep them or do, nor if they are native or not.

My favorites:
Odontomachus sp.
Myrmecocystus sp.
Veromessor sp.
Pheidole sp.
Myrmecia sp.
Atta sp.
Acromyrmex sp.
Cataglyphis sp.
(I have quite a few, but truly I think all ants are amazing, but these are my highlights)

My Ants:
(x1) Campontous semitstaceus ~20 workers, 1 Queen
(x1) Camponotus vicinus ~10 workers, 1 Queen (all black variety)
(x1) Tetramorium immigrans ~100 workers, 1 Queen
(x1) Myrmercocystus mexicanus -1 Queen
(x2) Mymercocystus mimcus -1 Queen
(x1) Mymercocystus testaceus ~45 workers, 1 Queen

Ants I have: Tapinoma sessile(2 queen colony). RED MORPH Camponotus neacticus(now has pupae!), Tetramorium immigrans (x3), Aphaenogaster sp, Temnothorax sp, Brachymyrmex sp.   possibly infertile   :(,  Ponera pennsylvanica, and Pheidole morrisi!  :yahoo: 

 

Other insects: Polistes sp. Queen

                    

Ants I need: Pheidole sp., Trachymyrmex sp., Crematogaster cerasi , Dorymyrmex sp. Most wanted: Pheidole morrisii

I've always been a fan of Lasius. Lasius social parasites are so interesting to me, as well as all the others.

Edit: And I forgot Prenolepis imparis!

I don't know if this thread is favorite ant to keep or favorite ant in general, but if it is to keep your favorites are not odontomachus.

 

You should try feeding a small colony anything but termites and see how that goes lol.

Hi there! I went on a 6 month or so hiatus, in part due, and in part cause of the death of my colonies. 

However, I went back to the Sierras, and restarted my collection, which is now as follows:

Aphaenogaster uinta, Camponotus vicinus, Camponotus modoc, Formica cf. aserva, Formica cf. micropthalma, Formica cf. manni, Formica subpolita, Formica cf. subaenescens, Lasius americanus, Manica invidia, Pogonomyrmex salinus, Pogonomyrmex sp. 1, Solenopsis validiuscula, & Solenopsis sp. 3 (new Sierra variant).

Why do so many people like crematogaster so much? 

 

I've kept them before and they're cool and all but I don't understand why you'd rather keep them than say oecophylla.


They are that picky? Also, its both.

Small colonies of the larger species are very, very picky. Mine kill insects and then dump them in the outworld.

Any cryptic species, my favorites being dacetines, proceratines, and the group of genera similar to basiceros, most arboreals, pseudomyrmicines and ankylomyrma in particular, and all of the attines and crematogastrines.

When it comes to local ants, I like Aphaenogaster and Myrmica a lot. Gnamptogenys is also a favorite genus of mine, although I will likely never get to keep them. Of any ant within the United States that I could possibly get a USDA permit for, I would have to name Pseudomyrmex gracilis. 


Currently keeping:

 

Tetramorium immigrans, Pogonomyrmex occidentalis

Myrmica punctiventris, Formica subsericea

Formica pallidefulva, Aphaeogaster cf. rudis

Camponotus pennsylvanicus

Camponotus nearcticus

Crematogaster cerasi

If i were to choose a number 1 it would be Orectognathus versicolor. They are so cool because they are like Pheidole and a trapjaw combined.

That actually looks like a snapjaw to me. Two different things.

My Number One would have to be Oecophylla smaragdina. I love their color, and the fact that they are aggressive, and have excellent vision.
