If you built a laying nest you could also use forstner bits, this will speed up the building a lot. You can just drill the chambers and manually connect them.

A lot of people are probably fooled by the sexy looking plastic formicariums, which are actually the worst thing to keep most ants in. Iā€™d buy one of yours if not for shipping.

Drew. I noticed the price of the plastic ones were very cheap [censored] lol. And yeah youā€™re right they do look really good? Why is it they arenā€™t as good? Is it moisture/humidity control? I could put that on my eBay listings.

An issue is that they are non-absorbent. This can be an issue for formic acid spraying ants as harmful gases can build up. Theyā€™re basically as far removed from a natural nest as you can come.

Slightly off topic but I did find a website in the UK that sold AAC formicariums for Ā£25 (same size as mine). They were obviously machine built so reasonably perfect looking. Only difference is they were screwed down. Obviously with sealing mine itā€™s not as good looking but you can physically see that the whole formicarium is sealed. Surely with screwing them down thereā€™s a small chance that smaller species could find a way out?

I would bet so. Also, the screws could get loosened over time.

Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest. -Proverbs 6: 6-8

Small species can and will find a way. Then youā€™re the one whoā€™s screwed.
