Bought this queen a couple of months ago and she's had abit of trouble starting a batch of brood. Now that she's got a larvae about halfway and I've brood boosted her, I decided to start up a journal on her. Since they're regarded as a hard to raise species (don't know why, they scavenge and attack anything that moves) I would appreciate heaps of advice on these beauties.

Young ant keeper with a decent amount of knowledge on local ant species.

Currently kept ant species, favorites have a star in front of their names (NOT in alphabetical order, also may be outdated sometimes): ★ Camponotus irritans inferior, ★ Ooceraea biroi, Pheidole parva, ★ Nylanderia sp., ★ Paraparatrechina tapinomoides, Platythyrea sp., Anochetus sp., Colobopsis sp. (cylindrica group), ★ Crematogaster ferrarii, Polyrhachis (Myrma) cf. pruinosa, Polyrhachis (Cyrtomyrma) laevissima, Tapinoma sp. (formerly Zatapinoma)

Death count: Probably over a hundred individual queens and colonies by now. I cannot recall whatsoever.

Looks good so far, love this species and their unique green metallic colour!


    Nylanderia parvula - 4 queen polygynous colony with larvae + devoloping workers

    Camponotus pennsylvanicus  - 1 queen with 2 cocoons, and a few larvae and eggs

    Tetramorium immigrans - 3 colonies, first nanetics!

    Formica pallidifulva - 1 queen, 8-10 eggs

    Tetramorium atratulum - 1 queen with roughly 17 host workers

    :D Pheidole pilifera - 1 queen! recently caught! :D

    Solenopsis Molesta - 2 queens so far, polygenous set-up

Unfortunately from last post this queen has lost a few larvae. Don't know from what because she's always being fed but the last couple are a good size and eating well. Hoping she doesn't stop laying and end up with no workers 😥

The larvae need substrate to spin cocoons, without substrate the larvae will fail to spin cocoons and eventually die.

Well this is strange to see the pupae. If I put substrate into the test tube it just becomes saturated and kills all the eggs, larvae and pupae. What do you recommend for the substrate?

You can try to wet down the substrate a little and see if that helps.

Any kind of substrate should be fine

I used sand that's commonly used in bonsai decoration so it's fine well draining but still became swamped beyond use. She seems to be doing fine without the substrate but I'll put some in the outworld to see if she brings it in and wraps it around the pupae herself.

She most likely will utilize the substrate. She'll probably just pile it up near the larvae and they will use it as scaffolding.
